Top 10 Halloween Costume Sites

October 9, 2009 by Drak Wolf

amazon_halloween_costumesSo what are the hottest places to go out and buy that Halloween costume this year? Well I did some poking around and came up with a list of the top ten Halloween Costume sites for the year 2009 and here they are:

1. Amazon.com. This place of course needs no introduction. They started out selling just books, but years ago expanded to sell everything and they are now the Walmart of the Internet. In addition to reasonable prices and wide selection, the offer free shipping on purchases over $25.

2. Buycostumes.com. These folks advertise themselves as being the web’s most popular costume site. They certainly seem to be, with prices slashed across the board. Unlike Amazon, they do not offer free shipping, but the shipping isn’t too expensive: $4 for orders under $50 or .99 cents for orders over $50 with coupon code 99ship.

3. CostumeDiscounters.com offers a pretty impressive deal on their web site: Find a lower price on the identical costume and we’ll match the price plus drop 20% off. Be careful that it really is the exact same item though. Free shipping with orders over $70.

4. The ExtremeHalloween.net site offers 13 different sites located under one roof, allowing you to pick and choose from the best of the sites they can offer and with each covering their own niche, such as Easter Bunnies or wigs.

5. The folks at Costumekingdom.com offer a pretty sweet deal: No hassle returns. The costume doesn’t fit, doesn’t look quite like what you wanted it to? Return it. Free shipping is offered for purchases of $65 or over.

6. I don’t know if you’ll actually get half price costumes here, but continuing our list of the top ten Halloween costume sites at number 6 is HalfPriceCostumes.com The prices are pretty reasonable and the navigation is easy on the eyes at this site. Free shipping on orders over $60 and 110% price guarantee.

7. Prankplace.com> will offer you more than just cool Halloween costumes. They also carry all the Halloween pranks you could possibly want to play on friends.

Top 10 Halloween Costumes for 2009

October 9, 2009 by Drak Wolf

Michael-Jackson-Thriller-Halloween-CostumeHalloween is rapidly approaching and if you haven’t yet chosen your costumes for the parties, you’d best hurry up. But what if you just don’t know what to do for the holiday? What if you can’t quite figure out what would be a good costume? Not to worry. Here, I’ve rounded up the top ten Halloween costumes for 2009.

1. At the top of our list, we must include the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The man who inspired generations and moonwalked his way into our hearts is still very much a part of the popular culture and you can get expect to see an awful lot of sequined gloves out trick or treating this Halloween.

2. Iron Man is also insanely popular since the new movie is expected out in about six months. The buzz that has been generated is tremendous and if you can find an Iron Man suit, you’ll be instantly recognizable.

3. While the healthcare reform debacle may have taken a bit of the shine off his veneer, the reality is that Barack Obama is still a powerful image for a great many people. You can easily buy a rubber mask with his likeness and show that you support our president.

4. Coming along with the superhero bandwagon, we can look forward to lots of friendly neighborhood spider men this Halloween. The fourth installment of the hit film is due in 2011, but it is already generating quite a little bit of buzz.

5. And speaking of superheroes, we cannot forget about the Man of Steel himself, the all time most popular super hero, Super Man. Even though the Man of Steel has been out of the publics’ eye for a while, he still holds enough cachet to make it onto our top ten list. Just try to get a thermal costume since those tights can get chilly.

6. Coming in at number six on our list of top ten Halloween costumes for 2009 is the ever popular fairy costume. No matter what other trends there are in the world, little girls often want to dress up as a fairy for the Halloween holiday.

7. Speaking of classics, for the ladies, have you considered dressing up as the ever classic Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? No matter how long the movie has been out, this one never goes out of style and will always be an eye catcher.

8. G.I. Joe came out this year and in the spirit of the army, this is always a popular costume: an army uniform. Of course, if you are a man or woman in uniform all the time, we salute you and suggest you find something different for Halloween just so you can relax and enjoy the holiday as well.

9. No list of the top ten Halloween costumes for 2009 would be complete without a mention of Bat Man and the Joker. Either of these guys will make a great costume this year.

10. Rounding out the top 10 Halloween costumes for 2009, we have another new sensation who wears a costume all the time, Hannah Montana. This lovely girl can sing about having the best of both worlds and now your daughter can do the same. Happy Halloween everyone. Be safe.

Easy Homemade Adult Halloween Costume

October 7, 2009 by Drak Wolf

Easy Homemade Adult Halloween CostumeSo, it’s the day before Halloween and you’ve been invited to a party. The theme is “Shock your Mother,” but you haven’t got a clue what to wear. You hunt desperately through your closet trying to find something, anything you could put on that would work, but nothing comes up. You consider going out to a store and buying or renting a costume, but then you remember, oh yeah, I’m not working. What I really need, you say to yourself, is an easy homemade adult Halloween costume. Hey, no problem. I’ve got your covered.

Let’s take another look inside of that closet of yours and see what you can find. Got an old leather jacket? Check. Dig out that old pair of jeans you’ve had since college and start ripping a few holes in them. You know what to do. You need to make it look like it was cool back in the 1980s. Now go out and buy some hair jel (in a pinch, Vaseline would do, but really, dude, spend a few bucks and get the hair jel). Slick back your hair, get out a nice clean T-shirt, slide on the jacket and the jeans together with some cool boots and you are three quarters of the way to making yourself a 1980’s punk rocker. If you really want to complete the look, either buy or borrow a dog collar with spikes on it and maybe even put a bit of black lipstick on. That works for both the men and the women, seriously.

Okay, here’s another idea for an easy homemade adult Halloween costume that’s exactly the opposite and requires almost no new purchases. The first thing you’ll need is your good Sunday suit. Or if you’re a woman, some kind of a pant suit business like thing. No, your nice jeans will not, emphatically not do the job here. Only a proper suit will work. You also have a nice pair of shoes, right? Dude, if you haven’t got that stuff you need it anyway. There’s a recession out there with 9.7% unemployment. You need a nice suit and shoes in order to land a good job.

Okay, now go and dig around for your old pair of dark sunglasses. You want one that looks cool, but I’m guessing you know that already. The wrap around kind that grandpa wears just will not cut it. Now all you need is a cheap toy machine gun (maybe ten bucks at Toys R Us) and an ear bud you don’t mind destroying. You can buy one of those for 99 cents. Stick one ear bud into an ear, tuck the wire under your collar around the back, don the sunglasses and suit, hoist the machine gun across your shoulders (you’ve got a strap, right?) and low and behold, you’re now a Secret Service agent. Congratulations on protecting the President and on creating an easy homemade adult Halloween costume. Have a happy Halloween.

Inexpensive Homedame Adult Halloween Costumes

October 6, 2009 by Drak Wolf

Inexpensive Homedame Adult Halloween CostumesWe know the recession has made for a really tough time for a lot of people. Let’s face it, with nearly 10% unemployment rampant in the United States and people still fearful for their jobs (not to mention those who have given up looking and the people who have had to actually move back home), this is no time to be spending a fortune to buy a professional Halloween costume. Instead, what you need are some ideas for inexpensive homemade adult Halloween costumes. So, here for your consideration are several ideas I’ve come up with over the years.

First off, for sports fans out there, you may very well have the makings of a basic costume already. Do you have a jersey from your favorite sports team and baseball cap from the same maybe? That’s a great start for a costume. If you’re into football, put on the jersey for your favorite team and dig out your old football helmet from high school. A bit of paint under the eyes and you’re good to go for the holiday.

For the ladies, try this interesting idea on for size – you can fashion a cape for yourself very easily by simply buying a piece of material. Go to a fabric store and ask to see the remnants. These are usually pieces that are left over and are too small for the store to sell for large projects, but you can often find pieces big enough for a cape. I used a piece of this kind of material to make a curtain and the way you make a cape is pretty much the same. Take your piece of some pretty material and buy a piece of solid material, either another remnant or splurge for something full blown.

Get a plain color that will match your remnant. This will be the lining of your inexpensive homemade adult Halloween costume (sorry, I have to mention that here). The plain colors are usually the cheapest. Now, use a glue gun to glue down the edges of the remnant to create your cape, but leave the top open. Next, get a piece of string or for something a bit fancier, ask the fabric store about ribbon or curtain ropes. Get a piece that would be the right size and then when you glue the top of the cape, simply place the string along the top, leaving yourself enough room so that the string or rope can slide through on either side. Now, take the solid piece of material and glue it onto the back as a lining. Add in a cheap tiara and you could be a princess. Or just stick with the cape. Maybe buy a cheap walking stick at a thrift store. The possibilities are simply endless.

Good luck with your inexpensive homemade adult Halloween costume. Feel free to mix and match these ideas and don’t be afraid to look for other ideas as well.

Homemade Halloween Fair Costumes

October 6, 2009 by Drak Wolf

So your daughter has decided that she really wants to be a fairy for this coming Halloween. One small problem with her plans though: The Great Recession means you’re out of work and you don’t know how you’re paying for candy for trick or treating, never mind how to pay for a whole costume. Not to worry though, I’m hear to help with homemade Halloween fairy costume ideas. Check ‘em out:

The first part of any plan for creating a fairy costume is relatively straightforward. You need a dress. You should pick something frilly looking and preferably white. If you’re in the mood for a bit of a project, choose an old dress you won’t mind leaving as a costume and either sew or glue some sequins onto the dress around the edges. This will create a lovely glittery effect and will enhance the halo look for our new fairy. Of course if your daughter happens to like that look, the dress can be used again even when you are not dressing her up for the holiday. In that case however, make sure you sew the sequins on and don’t glue them. The glue simply will not last for either a washing machine cycle or a dry cleaners.

As we continue on with planning our homemade fairy costume, we come to probably the most difficult part of the project. You need to find a way to create the wings she will wear on the back of her costume. Now you can of course buy some wings, but let’s assume that you are one of the unfortunate folks affected by that 9.7% unemployment rate and you want to do it yourself (or maybe you just prefer to do it yourself anyway).

Either way, all you need is a couple of wire hangers like you can get from the dry cleaners and some nice frilly material from any fabric store. Pick a color that will match the dress. Now, take your hangers and cut off the tip of them, the round hook where it would hang on the pole. You can try either twisting them off or use a wire cutter.

Now, you need to take the triangle that was left and twist it into the shape of a wing. Once you’ve done this, you should put your fabric from the fabric store around the wings and either sew or glue them on. Make sure to pay special attention to the edge where you cut the loop off and put extra padding there so it doesn’t cut anyone. Before you know it, your daughter will have a lovely Homemade Halloween fairy costume. Happy trick or treating!

Homemade Halloween Costume Patterns

October 6, 2009 by Drak Wolf

halloween_costumes_patternsWe know, the Great Recession has hit really hard all over America. People are still losing their jobs left and right, the unemployment rate is officially 9.7% but it’s actually closer to around 16% if we count those who have looked for work but can’t find any and have since given up. There is supposed to be one job available for every six people looking which means five of you are going wanting as Halloween season starts and you are desperately trying to figure out how you are going to be able to give your kids a proper holiday. Well, we can’t help you with the candy (although rice crispy treats are a cheap choice), but we can help you with some nice homemade Halloween costume patterns.

Well, patterns would be a bit of a stretch to explain here. We’re not actually going to give you drawings. Instead, we’ll provide you with some cool ideas for those patterns. Let’s start with some of the simplest of the patterns, things like wings and wands.

For wings, all you need is a pair of wire clippers, some old wire hangers from the dry cleaners and some nice frilly looking fabric from a fabric store. What you will do is to cut off the hook from the top of the hanger, where it would hang on the pole. Then you can simply bend the resultant triangle into the shape of wings. Glue or sew your material onto the new wings, paying special attention to the area where you cut off the hook and covering that especially well to make sure no one gets cut from it.

Continuing our homemade Halloween costume patterns, you can create a wand very simply by simply buying a wooden stick (they can be had at any hardware store for just a few dollars), then cut out some cardboard into the pattern of a star. Paint the whole thing with white paint and add some glitter and voila, instant wand for your child to use for a fairy costume, a wizard or witch costume or anything else you can think of.

Want more ideas for homemade Halloween costume patterns? Just look around you. The whole world is filled with patterns. Check out some simple things like leaves, snowflakes, even houses. All these things can be used in patterns for Halloween in order to create beautiful costumes. And the material is largely free in the form of old cardboard boxes from the supermarket or cast off clothing than can be torn apart and remade. The sky is the limit and it’s all based on your own imagination. Happy Halloween.

Homemade Halloween Costumes — Phantom of the Opera

October 6, 2009 by Drak Wolf

Phantom_of_the_Opera_halloween_costumesWell Halloween is just around the corner now, coming in at the end of October and with the economy still reeling, with 9.7% unemployment and no end in sight, it is time to consider ideas for homemade Halloween costumes. Instead of wasting a ton of money buying made in China junk, try this simple idea for a cool homemade Halloween costume: The Phantom of the Opera.

It sounds really complicated, but it isn’t. Especially for adult men who may have their old tux from their wedding lying around. The biggest part of the costume is in fact the tux. If you don’t have one, a black suit might work, especially if you can lay your hands on a bow tie. The other parts of this costume are fairly simple.

You will need the half mask of the phantom for your homemade Halloween costume. The easiest thing is to simply buy one; they can be had for just a few dollars at most novelty shops. Or, if you are feeling creative, buy yourself some white oak tag (heavy cardboard like paper used for school projects – it can be found at most craft stores) and start by cutting an oval face from the material. Most oak tag pieces should be big enough to let you make several of these, so don’t worry too much if you don’t get it right the first time. Once you have your oval, you want to create a wavy line across the middle, to match the phantom’s face. You can easily see examples of this using Google’s image search (just search for Phantom of the Opera Mask). A key tip here is never to have a hard cut with your scissors. In other words, if you fully clamp your scissors down, you will create a tip, which you don’t want. Keep the scissors moving the entire time until you’ve sliced the entire mask in half. A simple string or sturdy rubber band can be used to hold the mask in place.

Next, you’ll need a cape. This is fairly simple as well. Go out and buy yourself a piece of black cloth from any fabric store. You can either sew the edges to create a cape, or do what I do: use a glue gun. To have a little more fun with your cape, you can also buy some other color of material to put on the inside and create a lining. In order to tie the cape around your neck, you need to fold over the top and either glue or sew it down, leaving enough room for a rope or tassel to be threaded through the top of it.

Put on your cape, your tux and your mask and you’ve got your homemade Halloween Costume ready to go. Now to find your love as the Phantom!

100 Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas for 2009

October 6, 2009 by Drak Wolf

homemade_halloween_costume_ideasYes, the economy sucks right now and we’re all trying to dig ourselves out from a mountain of debt, but what do we do if we want to celebrate Halloween anyway? It sucks big time to not have the money to buy a professional costume, but not to worry. I’m here to help with several homemade Halloween costume ideas.

First off, this is one from an old movie that I’ve always loved the idea of and I think could work well (though you will need to explain it to some people). It’s the Law Suit; basically, what you do is to scour the web for various legal documents. A simple Google search should bring up plenty of material for you. Print out around thirty of them or so and then go and grab your Sunday suit. Use some safety pins to pin the legal documents all over your suit and lo and behold, you’ve got a lawsuit (Law Suit, get it?).

Okay, for the ladies who don’t mind showing off some skin, try this on for size: Get one of your most scanty looking dresses – something tight fitting would be best and wear a pair of long boots together with it. Add in tons of makeup, much more than you would ordinarily wear, maybe die your hair a funky color as well and well, you know. . .just make sure you can explain to any cops who stop you that it’s a Halloween costume and you’re not a “working girl.”

Okay, how about this one for a homemade Halloween costume idea: The Michael Jackson look. Basically, you can choose how far you want to take this and how much effort you’ll put into your costume. You want to use either a hair press or a curler to give your hair one of those Michael Jackson looks. If you have short hair, you’ll need to buy a wig. If your hair is not the right color, dye it black. Next, use some light powder to give your skin a Michael Jackson style look. Add in a black jacket with some silver tassels across it (you can buy and glue or sew the silver tassels on from any craft store) and some black pants. Complete the look with a flat black hat. If you can get your hands on a campaign hat from some political party, you could paint it black for a cheap and close approximation of Michael’s hat.

These are of course just a few of the 100 ideas. We will continue to update the list. Try and experiment and tell your friends about your homemade Halloween costume ideas. They’ll thank you and you’ll both save money in the long run.
