Michael-Jackson-Thriller-Halloween-CostumeHalloween is rapidly approaching and if you haven’t yet chosen your costumes for the parties, you’d best hurry up. But what if you just don’t know what to do for the holiday? What if you can’t quite figure out what would be a good costume? Not to worry. Here, I’ve rounded up the top ten Halloween costumes for 2009.

1. At the top of our list, we must include the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The man who inspired generations and moonwalked his way into our hearts is still very much a part of the popular culture and you can get expect to see an awful lot of sequined gloves out trick or treating this Halloween.

2. Iron Man is also insanely popular since the new movie is expected out in about six months. The buzz that has been generated is tremendous and if you can find an Iron Man suit, you’ll be instantly recognizable.

3. While the healthcare reform debacle may have taken a bit of the shine off his veneer, the reality is that Barack Obama is still a powerful image for a great many people. You can easily buy a rubber mask with his likeness and show that you support our president.

4. Coming along with the superhero bandwagon, we can look forward to lots of friendly neighborhood spider men this Halloween. The fourth installment of the hit film is due in 2011, but it is already generating quite a little bit of buzz.

5. And speaking of superheroes, we cannot forget about the Man of Steel himself, the all time most popular super hero, Super Man. Even though the Man of Steel has been out of the publics’ eye for a while, he still holds enough cachet to make it onto our top ten list. Just try to get a thermal costume since those tights can get chilly.

6. Coming in at number six on our list of top ten Halloween costumes for 2009 is the ever popular fairy costume. No matter what other trends there are in the world, little girls often want to dress up as a fairy for the Halloween holiday.

7. Speaking of classics, for the ladies, have you considered dressing up as the ever classic Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz? No matter how long the movie has been out, this one never goes out of style and will always be an eye catcher.

8. G.I. Joe came out this year and in the spirit of the army, this is always a popular costume: an army uniform. Of course, if you are a man or woman in uniform all the time, we salute you and suggest you find something different for Halloween just so you can relax and enjoy the holiday as well.

9. No list of the top ten Halloween costumes for 2009 would be complete without a mention of Bat Man and the Joker. Either of these guys will make a great costume this year.

10. Rounding out the top 10 Halloween costumes for 2009, we have another new sensation who wears a costume all the time, Hannah Montana. This lovely girl can sing about having the best of both worlds and now your daughter can do the same. Happy Halloween everyone. Be safe.

Homemade Halloween Fair Costumes

So your daughter has decided that she really wants to be a fairy for this coming Halloween. One small problem with her plans though: The Great Recession means you’re out of work and you don’t know how you’re paying for candy for trick or treating, never mind how to pay for a whole costume. Not to worry though, I’m hear to help with homemade Halloween fairy costume ideas. Check ‘em out:

The first part of any plan for creating a fairy costume is relatively straightforward. You need a dress. You should pick something frilly looking and preferably white. If you’re in the mood for a bit of a project, choose an old dress you won’t mind leaving as a costume and either sew or glue some sequins onto the dress around the edges. This will create a lovely glittery effect and will enhance the halo look for our new fairy. Of course if your daughter happens to like that look, the dress can be used again even when you are not dressing her up for the holiday. In that case however, make sure you sew the sequins on and don’t glue them. The glue simply will not last for either a washing machine cycle or a dry cleaners.

As we continue on with planning our homemade fairy costume, we come to probably the most difficult part of the project. You need to find a way to create the wings she will wear on the back of her costume. Now you can of course buy some wings, but let’s assume that you are one of the unfortunate folks affected by that 9.7% unemployment rate and you want to do it yourself (or maybe you just prefer to do it yourself anyway).

Either way, all you need is a couple of wire hangers like you can get from the dry cleaners and some nice frilly material from any fabric store. Pick a color that will match the dress. Now, take your hangers and cut off the tip of them, the round hook where it would hang on the pole. You can try either twisting them off or use a wire cutter.

Now, you need to take the triangle that was left and twist it into the shape of a wing. Once you’ve done this, you should put your fabric from the fabric store around the wings and either sew or glue them on. Make sure to pay special attention to the edge where you cut the loop off and put extra padding there so it doesn’t cut anyone. Before you know it, your daughter will have a lovely Homemade Halloween fairy costume. Happy trick or treating!

100 Homemade Halloween Costume Ideas for 2009

homemade_halloween_costume_ideasYes, the economy sucks right now and we’re all trying to dig ourselves out from a mountain of debt, but what do we do if we want to celebrate Halloween anyway? It sucks big time to not have the money to buy a professional costume, but not to worry. I’m here to help with several homemade Halloween costume ideas.

First off, this is one from an old movie that I’ve always loved the idea of and I think could work well (though you will need to explain it to some people). It’s the Law Suit; basically, what you do is to scour the web for various legal documents. A simple Google search should bring up plenty of material for you. Print out around thirty of them or so and then go and grab your Sunday suit. Use some safety pins to pin the legal documents all over your suit and lo and behold, you’ve got a lawsuit (Law Suit, get it?).

Okay, for the ladies who don’t mind showing off some skin, try this on for size: Get one of your most scanty looking dresses – something tight fitting would be best and wear a pair of long boots together with it. Add in tons of makeup, much more than you would ordinarily wear, maybe die your hair a funky color as well and well, you know. . .just make sure you can explain to any cops who stop you that it’s a Halloween costume and you’re not a “working girl.”

Okay, how about this one for a homemade Halloween costume idea: The Michael Jackson look. Basically, you can choose how far you want to take this and how much effort you’ll put into your costume. You want to use either a hair press or a curler to give your hair one of those Michael Jackson looks. If you have short hair, you’ll need to buy a wig. If your hair is not the right color, dye it black. Next, use some light powder to give your skin a Michael Jackson style look. Add in a black jacket with some silver tassels across it (you can buy and glue or sew the silver tassels on from any craft store) and some black pants. Complete the look with a flat black hat. If you can get your hands on a campaign hat from some political party, you could paint it black for a cheap and close approximation of Michael’s hat.

These are of course just a few of the 100 ideas. We will continue to update the list. Try and experiment and tell your friends about your homemade Halloween costume ideas. They’ll thank you and you’ll both save money in the long run.
